What a Move Actually Costs
Moving quotes vary enormously for the same job. Here is what drives the number and which line items are avoidable.
Cost is driven by four variables: distance, weight, service level, and timing. Change any one and the number moves substantially.
Typical ranges
| Home size | Local (under 100 miles) | Long distance (1,000+ miles) | Container / DIY |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1 bedroom | $400 – $1,200 | $1,800 – $4,500 | $700 – $2,200 |
| 2 bedrooms | $800 – $2,200 | $3,000 – $7,000 | $1,200 – $3,400 |
| 3 bedrooms | $1,300 – $3,500 | $4,500 – $10,000 | $1,900 – $4,800 |
| 4+ bedrooms | $2,000 – $5,500 | $6,500 – $15,000+ | $2,600 – $6,500 |
The charges people do not expect
- Long carry fee when the truck cannot park close to the door
- Stair or elevator fees per flight or per building
- Shuttle fee when a full-size trailer cannot access the street and a smaller truck is required
- Bulky item fees for pianos, safes, gym equipment, and large appliances
- Storage-in-transit if delivery dates do not align
- Packing materials, which add up quickly when the mover supplies them
- Reassembly charges some companies bill separately
- Fuel surcharges and, on interstate moves, seasonal rate adjustments
Where to save
- Purge aggressively — long-distance pricing is by weight, so every box you do not move is money
- Pack yourself and buy only the specialty boxes you need
- Source free boxes from local retailers and neighbors
- Move mid-week and mid-month, outside peak season
- Disassemble your own furniture and bag the hardware
- Handle your own small, fragile, and high-value items
- Get three estimates — the spread on identical jobs is routinely 30 percent or more
Full-service, container, or truck rental
Full-service costs the most and requires the least from you. Containers sit in the middle: the company delivers a unit, you load it, they transport it — a good option for flexible timing and long distances. A rental truck is cheapest in fees and most expensive in effort and risk, and the advertised daily rate excludes mileage, fuel, and damage coverage.
Budget for the parts that are not the truck
Utility deposits and connection fees, cleaning at both ends, travel and lodging on a long move, meals during the transition, replacing what does not fit, and setting up the new home. A reasonable planning figure is an additional 10 to 20 percent above the transport quote.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to move a 3-bedroom house?
Commonly $1,300 to $3,500 locally with movers, and $4,500 to $10,000 long distance, depending on weight, distance, and service level.
Is it cheaper to move yourself?
Usually in cash terms, once you count truck rental, mileage, fuel, equipment, and supplies. The savings shrink on long-distance moves and disappear if something is damaged.
When is the cheapest time to move?
October through April, mid-month, mid-week. Peak season pricing in summer commonly runs 20 to 30 percent higher.
